(un)becoming

unbecoming, adjective
Detracting from one’s appearance, character, or reputation; unattractive or unseemly: an unbecoming hat; unbecoming language.

becoming noun
Any process of change. any change involving realization of potentialities, as a movement from the lower level of potentiality to the higher level of actuality.

I photograph the sights, sites, and spectacles that i come across in my walking-around, everyday life, reveling in the strangeness of the commonplace and the visual beauty that can found in the seemingly unattractive. And as fact can be stranger than fiction—so too can a photo be stranger than work created in the imagination.

These are photographs of surfaces that are changing/have changed. You might say they are “unbecoming”—literally and figuratively, like canvases that nature, humans and time have painted and changed—a once blank surface is now painted with shadows, graffiti, drips or mold.

For me these images represent entropy, death, evolution, rebirth—basically the nature of things—there for me to put a frame around.
